Frequently asked questions

How long will it take for my mortgage assistance application to be reviewed and approved?

An initial decision usually happens less than 30 days after we receive all required application documents.

How long does the mortgage assistance process take?

After we’ve reviewed your application and learned more about your financial circumstances, we can usually offer help options within a few weeks. In some cases, you may need to make trial payments for a few months.

You’ll receive email updates about the status of your application from your account.

Where can I find details regarding the status of my application?

The borrower portal (your online account) contains updates regarding:

Can I make payments while my request for assistance is under review?

It’s always best to make any payment if you’re financially able to do so. Making payments now will reduce the amount that you'll need to repay later.

You can make a fee-free payment online, through the U.S. Bank Mobile App or by calling 800-365-7900 .

The person whose name is on the mortgage has passed away. As the “successor in interest,” how do I apply for mortgage assistance?

First, you’ll need to send a written request that briefly explains the situation and includes these documents:

U.S. Bank, Attn: Successor in Interest
PO Box 21948
Eagan, MN 55121

Or fax to: 877-903-6972

Next, we’ll mail you a Potential Successor in Interest form to complete and return. We’ll review it, request additional information if needed and then formally establish you as the Successor in Interest. You’ll then be able to apply for mortgage assistance.

If I’ve gone through a divorce since obtaining the mortgage, or my ex-spouse’s name is listed on the modification documents and their name is not associated with the loan, will they be required to sign the modification documents? What if they refuse?

Your ex-spouse must sign the modification documentation unless:

What should I expect after I’ve successfully completed a mortgage assistance program?

In most cases, we’ll update your new loan terms a few weeks after we receive your final loan modification documents. We’ll start sending billing statements right away, but even if you haven’t received one yet, it’s important to resume making monthly payments.
